• Partnership for Idaho's Future

This video explains how businesses and residents work together to invest in the communities of Idaho. Idahoans are now discussing the property tax on business equipment, which brings $141 million directly to schools and communities. The Legislature of 2008 passed a law for the eventual exemption of equipment up to $100,000 as a compromise solution. If this solution were enacted today, 90% of businesses (the small businesses) would get a break, while schools and communities would lose only about $20 million. A complete repeal of the tax would threaten schools, fire protection, police protection, ambulances, and the other services that keep communities strong. This tax would shift to residents to fill the gap. Some areas would have to nearly DOUBLE real estate property taxes to maintain exis...

  • BLM and University of Idaho 4-H Partnership

In 2009, BLM set out to form a partnership with the University of Idaho’s 4-H Extension program to develop a wild horse weanling training program. The goal was to design a program where youth, ages 12 to 18, could train young wild horse weanlings and further develop their horse handling skills while increasing the adoptability rate for these horses. The partnership has been a shining example of success. Since the program’s inception, every weanling that has been trained has been adopted. The 4-H groups have raised dollars to support their programs—a true win-win for all involved. So how does it work? We’re going to follow the process from weanling pick-up to the adoption event that will occur 6 – 8 weeks later when the weanlings will be shown during a county fair event and then offered f...

We’re sick of it – and we know you are too! The blight of shot up junk trashing our public lands has plagued many a recreationist, rangeland management specialist, wildlife biologist and all who enjoy the amazing vistas our public lands offer. The Bureau of Land Management is raising awareness of this cultural problem through its Don’t Dump Idaho campaign. Recently, Twin Falls District BLM Law Enforcement Officer Jeff Knisley joined Twin Falls County Sheriff Tom Carter at a site just north of Balanced Rock littered with yard waste, a dead refrigerator, vacuum, wire, and oodles of spent shell casings. Their message? There are 14 sites around the Magic Valley managed by Southern Idaho Solid Waste where this kind of garbage belongs – not on public land.

Unlike the better-known tenors Sims and Getz, Cohn contributed arrangements to the Herman band. Cohn had a reputation as a lyrical flowing soloist. After leaving the Herman group Cohn went on to play with a variety of other musicians, but his best-known association was his long-term partnership with fellow Herman veteran tenor player Sims, beginning with the quintet they co-led in 1956. They continued to play together sporadically until the death of Sims. The high point of their recorded output can be found on You 'n' Me, a collection of standards and original compositions released on Mercury Records in 1960. The two also played on some of author Jack Kerouac's recordings. The rhythm section on their 1950s recordings included Mose Allison on piano. In addition to his work as a jazz tenor saxophonist, Cohn was an arranger. His work included the Broadway productions of Raisin' and Sophisticated Ladies. Also, Cohn did arrangements for unreleased Linda Ronstadt recordings from the 1980s. Cohn also appeared on stage with Elvis Presley in June, 1972, as a member of the Joe Malin Orchestra at Madison Square Garden. Al Cohn died of liver cancer in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania in 1988. Cohn's first wife was singer Marilyn Moore. His son, Joe Cohn, is a jazz guitar player. Granddaughter Shaye Cohn, Joe's daughter, is a musician who plays cornet with her band Tuba Skinny in New Orleans and at jazz festivals in Italy and Australia and elsewhere. Shaye also plays accordion, violin and piano. Al Cohn was also briefly married to singer Mary Ann McCall.
